…Currently the gateway site is landscaped with temporary vegetation and artistic elements that have weathered and been vandalized throughout the years. The site also offers challenges as one side is bound by the high-trafficked NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. while the other sides are surrounded by commercial development and parking lots.
In addition, the project proposes to create and locate heritage markers at strategic locations along NE Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. These heritage markers may honor individuals, cultural or historical events, or topics of significance to the inner northeast neighborhoods of Portland. This series of markers will link the corridor together and help enhance its identity.
The markers could both draw attention to each neighborhood’s distinctiveness yet serve to unite the larger community. The markers are envisioned to be placed within the city’s right-of-way unless other arrangements can be agreed upon….
